Third Juneteenth Celebration

The 2008 celebration is scheduled on June 14 in Old Sacramento.

June 19th is the unofficial holiday observed by thousands of African Americans. The holiday originated in Texas during the Civil War period, when news of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln in September 1862, the news did not reach Texas slaves until June 1865. The California State Conference of the NAACP wants to bring the communities together to celebrate this milestone and educate others on the rich history.
