The California State NAACP Election Analysis 100% Correct on California Ballot Measures

July 9, 2006

The voters of California agreed with the State NAACP that protection of Proposition 98 is still an important part of achieving a level playing field in our public schools. “The rejection of Proposition 86 and Proposition 87 means that public school funding will not be eroded by propositions seeking to circumvent the constitutional requirement that they contribute a part of the new taxes to public education”, stated Alice A. Huffman, President of the California NAACP,.

The defeat of Proposition 88 and proposition 90, the parcel tax and the private property initiatives again speaks to the public’s rejection of hidden taxes, a repeal of government protections, and the ability to protect the interest of the working populations in this state. All of the regressive taxes were rejected which is extremely great for low income citizens.

The rejection of Proposition 85 Parental Notification ballot measure was rejected by a larger margin than in 2005 measure. Huffman stated, “It is clear that this requirement if implemented would be more detrimental to young women and also the beginning of the erosion of Roe v. Wade”.

“We applaud the efforts made to reform campaign finance but we along with the public believe it will only happen when the air waves are regulated and any other reforms will have an unintended negative effect on the candidates who are not wealthy and minorities”, said Huffman.

The California NAACP supported the infrastructure bonds 1A through 1E and will work closely with the administration to ensure our communities are a priority in their implementation.

We believe the overall election results has given the state NAACP a legislature, including an all time high of African Americans, that is willing to work with us to improve the lives of those who need government assistance. And we look forward to continuing the work began last term with the Governor and his staff on behalf of Californians.

Huffman said, “We applaud our local units, members and friends who delivered one million Minority News letters to the community and responded to the National Program, “To Arrive with 5” at the polls and know that their hard work made a difference.”
