Citizens Redistricting Commission
It is very important that members of our community serve on the Citizens Redistricting Commission because the Commissioner decisions will affect the voting rights of everyone. It you want a fair and balanced redistricting process, then you should apply to serve as a Commissioner. If you are not interested, then encourage other people you know to apply.
Who Can Apply
All registered voters are eligible to serve on the Citizens Redistricting Commission so long as they have not changed their party affiliation in the past five years. However, an applicant is disqualified if, in the past ten years, the applicant or any member of his or her immediate family has done any of the following:
- Been appointed to, elected to, or have been a candidate for federal or state office.
- Served as an elected or appointed member of a political party central committee.
- Served as paid congressional, legislative, or Board of Equalization staff.
- Served as an officer, employee, or paid consultant of a political party or the campaign committee of a candidate for elective federal or state office.
- Been a registered federal, state, or local lobbyist.
- Contributed $2,000 or more to any congressional, state or local candidate in any year.
- Been staff and consultants to, persons under contract with, or any person with an immediate family relationship with the Governor, a member of the Legislature, a member of Congress, or a member of the State Board of Equalization.
Compensation for Commissioners
Members of the Commission shall be compensated at a rate of $300 a day for each day, plus reimbursement of personal expenses, that a commissioner is engaged in Commission business.
Terms of Service
Commissioners will serve until a member of the succeeding commission is appointed.
Application and Selection Schedule
January 1, 2010
Applications must be made available.
August 1, 2010
Commissioner applications must be submitted to the Applicant Review Panel.
October 1, 2010
A pool of 60 applicant names must be selected by the Applicant Review Panel.
November 15, 2010
The Legislature may reduce the pool of applicants to 36.
November 20, 2010
The State Auditor must randomly select 8 commissioners from the remaining pool.
December 31, 2010
The eight selected Commissioners must select the last 6 Commissioners to finalize the establishment of the Citizens Redistricting Commission.
