State's Diversity Reflected In Phase 2 Redistricting Commission Selections

SACRAMENTO - Supporting a change in law that allows citizens to draw political power lines was a difficult decision for the California State NAACP, according to President Alice Huffman. “….while we believed that a citizen’s commission could be a good thing, we were fearful that African Americans could be excluded from participation,” said Huffman. “However, with the conclusion of phase two of the application process, much of the anxiety is starting to subside because the Applicant Review Panel (ARP) of the Bureau of State Audits has narrowed the pool of applicants to 120, and the makeup of the pool truly reflects California’s diverse population.”

NAACP Resolution Condemns Racism In Tea Party

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE - Leaders of the country's largest civil rights organization accused tea party activists on Tuesday of tolerating bigotry and approved a resolution condemning racism within the political movement.

The resolution was adopted during the annual convention in Kansas City of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, spokesman Chris Fleming said. Local tea party organizers disputed claims of racism and called on the NAACP to withdraw the resolution.

California NAACP moves to make Neverland Ranch a state park

A resolution is in the works to order state parks officials to study converting the roughly 2,600-acre property into a state park. The state NAACP is backing the idea, and a lawmaker has signaled he is on board to carry the legislation.

"I think Michael's history is world history and I think it would become the No. 1 attraction for the state parks if we could pull it off," said state NAACP President Alice Huffman, who also serves on the state Parks Commission.
